You have two paths to a bike for the day: prep your own, or rent one that is already track-ready. Both work. Here is what each involves.

Prepping your own bike

Most street bikes can do a track day with minimal prep. The goal is simple: nothing loose, nothing leaking, and good tires and brakes. A typical beginner-day prep checklist looks like this:

  • Tires: good tread, no cracking, correct pressures for the track.
  • Brakes: healthy pads, firm lever, fresh-enough fluid.
  • Fluids: no leaks. Some events want coolant swapped for water or a track-legal coolant to avoid slippery spills.
  • Controls: levers and bars tight, throttle snaps shut on its own.
  • Bodywork: mirrors and lights often need taping or removal. Remove the license plate if asked.
  • Chain and sprockets: properly tensioned and lubed.
  • Safety wire / fasteners: some organizations require safety-wiring certain bolts. Check your event's rules.

If any of this is over your head, that is normal. Our partner shops handle track prep, suspension, and tuning, and can get your bike sorted before the day.

Renting a track-ready bike

The simplest option is to skip prep entirely and ride one of ours. motoBRP keeps track-ready rental bikes on site at Buttonwillow. That means:

  • No buying a dedicated track bike before you know you love it.
  • No prep, no trailer, no tech-inspection stress on your own machine.
  • A bike that is already set up for the track, so you can focus on riding.

Renting pairs especially well with a coaching day: show up, get on a prepared bike, and spend the day learning instead of wrenching.

Which should you choose?

If you already have a suitable bike and enjoy the prep, bring your own. If you are testing the waters, want zero hassle, or do not want to risk your street bike, rent. Many riders rent for their first few days, then buy a track bike once they are hooked, and store it trackside with us so the tow goes away too.

Ready to ride with a coach?

The fastest way to put this into practice is a coaching day with a pro-racer coach. Bikes are on site.
